It was settled in April.
Both of them love it. There was no argument, no spreadsheet, no long negotiation. It came up on a Sunday, and they looked at each other, and that was that.
And nobody knows.
At first there was a reason, and it was a good one. If people hear it early, people have opinions, and a face across a table can put a mark on a word that never comes off. So it was kept in the house, between two people, and that was wise.
But April was a long time ago now.
And somewhere between then and now, the keeping stopped being a shield and started being a wall. There are conversations that get steered. There is a small jolt every time somebody asks. There is a whole performance of we have not decided yet, delivered with a straight face, to people they love.
And here is the thing neither of them has said out loud: the hiding is now heavier than the choosing ever was.
I want to be careful here, because I am not going to tell anybody to announce a name they want to keep. Plenty of families hold it to the day and that is a good and joyful thing. This is not about that.
This is about the specific weight that arrives when a secret stops being a gift you are saving and starts being a thing you are guarding.
Those two feel completely different from the inside, and everybody in that situation knows exactly which one they are in.

Nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest
There is a line of Jesus in Luke that people usually hear as a warning, and it is not one.
For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. (Luke 8:17, King James Version)
It sits at the end of the parable of the lamp, and the lamp is the point. A lamp does not get lit and put under a bed. The whole nature of light is that it ends up out in the room.
That is not a threat. It is a description of what light does, and the passage is about how the word of God behaves once it is in a person, which is to say: it comes out.
You are holding something that was always going to be spoken, and Luke 8:17 describes that as the nature of the thing rather than as a risk. The written word puts the lamp on a stand as the ordinary end of the story, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that sound like relief instead of exposure.
And notice the word the verse uses about the coming out. Manifest. Known. Come abroad. Not caught. Not found out. There is no shame anywhere in that sentence.
You have been guarding a lamp, and Scripture never once treats a lamp on a stand as a thing that got away. The Holy Spirit is what turns the picture from a leak into a light.
The two kinds of keeping
Now let me make the practical distinction, because this whole thing turns on it.
There is a keeping that is a gift being saved. It has a date on it. It has a moment attached: the day she arrives, and everybody hears it at once, and it is a small joyful ambush that has been planned for months. That keeping is light to carry. It has an end in view. It is a surprise, and people carrying a surprise are usually rather pleased.
And there is a keeping that has no date and no end. It just goes on. It started as a shield and has quietly become a fear of the moment it stops being secret. That keeping gets heavier every week, because there is more to protect and no plan for putting it down.
You are able to tell which one this is, and no verse anywhere condemns either of them. Luke 8 puts the lamp out in the open as its natural home, and it is the Spirit of God who gives somebody the honesty to name which kind of keeping they are actually in.
Here is the tell, and it is a simple one. When somebody asks, what happens in the chest.
If it is a surprise being saved, the answer is a small private delight. There is a smile that has to be swallowed.
If it is a wall, the answer is a jolt, and then a scramble for the sentence, and then relief when the subject moves on.
You have felt the difference between those two every single time somebody asked, and the written word does not ask anybody to keep guarding what was made to be spoken. The Holy Spirit is the one who is present in a chest during exactly that half second.
One person outside the house
So here is the practical thing, and it is small, and it does not end the surprise for anybody who is genuinely saving one.
Say it out loud, once, to one person outside the house.
Not a family announcement. Not the relatives with opinions. One safe person, chosen because their reaction cannot become a verdict: a friend far away, somebody at church who barely knows the family, anybody who has no stake in it.
You are choosing the one hearer rather than being ambushed by a table, and Luke 8 has never once demanded a crowd before a word could be spoken. The written word lights a lamp and sets it where light goes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who picks the moment as well as the room.
Because here is what nobody expects. The weight is not coming from the number of people who know. It is coming from the fact that the name has never once been in the air. It has lived in two mouths and a kitchen for five months, and a word that has never been spoken outside a house starts to feel fragile in a way it has no reason to be.
Saying it once, to one person, in daylight, does something the announcement will do later, and does it now, and does it cheaply.
You are able to put it in the air without giving it away, and Luke 8:17 has never once required an audience before a thing was allowed to be spoken. The Holy Spirit is the one in the room when it is said the first time, and the written word lights the lamp and sets it where light goes.
And notice what usually comes back. The person says the name, back, in a sentence. And the sound of somebody else saying it, out loud, without a face on it, is the thing that has been missing since April.
You were never protecting a fragile thing, and Scripture calls the coming out manifest rather than lost. The Holy Spirit is what makes a name spoken once into a name that can be carried lightly again.
So here is what I believe is going out over two people who have been guarding a word since April.
You are carrying a lamp and not a liability, and Luke 8:17 has never once described the coming out of a hidden thing as a loss. The written word calls it manifest and known and come abroad, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lifts the guarding off two tired people.
You are free to say it once to one person without ending anything, and no verse anywhere put a threshold under an honest word. The Spirit of God is present in a parking lot as much as in a family announcement.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You have been keeping a promise you never actually made, and Scripture sets the lamp on the stand as the ordinary end of the story. Luke 8 has no shame anywhere in it, and the Holy Spirit is what turns five months of guarding back into a gift being saved.
Once. Out loud. One person outside the house.
Declare this over yourself
- Secret we have kept since April, you have grown heavier than the choosing and you were never protection. Luke 8:17 says nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest, so by the Holy Spirit I say it out loud once today to one safe person, in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of the moment it stops being ours, you are not guarding anything and I set you down. The written word puts a lamp on a stand and calls that the ordinary end of it, and by the Spirit of God I stop treating a name as a fragile thing.
- Father, You said that nothing hid shall not be known, and there is no shame anywhere in that sentence. Your word calls it manifest and come abroad, so by Your Spirit I let this word into the air today and I carry it lightly again.
