I Chose For Meaning And Lost The Sound

She did it properly. That is the frustrating part.

She did not choose on a feeling. She read about the meanings, compared them, thought about what she wanted said over her daughter, and picked the one that carried the best thing.

And it is a good name. There is nothing wrong with it. She can defend it to anybody and she has, several times, and the defense is genuinely convincing.

And she does not enjoy saying it.

There is another one. It has no particular meaning, or a dull one, and every time she says it something in her mouth is pleased. It has been pleased since the first week. It is pleased right now, while she is reading this and pretending she has not noticed.

And she has decided that this makes her shallow.

That is the actual problem in that house, and it is not a problem about names at all. A woman has quietly ruled that the part of her that responds to a sound is the frivolous part, and that the part of her that reads about origins is the serious one, and she has been running the whole decision on that ruling since June.

I want to overturn it, because it is backwards, and I can show you why from one verse.

The Lord looketh on the heart

There is a line in the first book of Samuel, said while a prophet is choosing wrongly, and it is not the line people usually think it is.

For the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. (1 Samuel 16:7, King James Version)

You are being seen at a level a criterion cannot reach, and 1 Samuel 16:7 has never once graded a person on which method they used. The written word puts the looking in God's hands rather than in a scoring system, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sees what is actually happening in a woman while she chooses.

Now the twist, and it is the whole reason this verse belongs here.

Samuel was doing exactly the right thing by human standards. He was looking at the obvious markers, the ones anybody could defend, the ones that would have stood up in any room. And that was the outward appearance.

You are standing exactly where Samuel stood, and 1 Samuel 16:7 has never once treated that as a character fault. The written word corrects the prophet without one word of contempt in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the correcting gently.

So ask which half of this decision is the outward appearance.

It is the meaning. The meaning is the part that can be shown to people. It is the part that survives a question at a table, the part with a reason attached, the part that makes a woman look like somebody who thought about it.

And the sound is the inward thing. It is the part with no defense attached and no argument behind it, the part that cannot be explained at a bus stop, the thing in her that responded in week one and has not stopped.

You have had it exactly the wrong way round, and Scripture calls the defensible marker the outward one. The Spirit of God is the one who does the seeing that a criterion cannot do, and 1 Samuel 16 has a prophet looking at the obvious thing and being corrected.

What the mouth knows

Now the practical part, because the ear is not a frivolous instrument and it deserves a proper defense.

A name is a sound before it is anything else. It will be a sound fifty thousand times and a meaning perhaps twelve. It gets called across a room, said in the dark, shouted from a doorway, said tenderly, said in a hurry. All of that is sound and none of it is definition.

The mouth that has been enjoying the other name for four months has been doing real work, and it has been overruled every single time by a page.

You are carrying an instrument God built and have been calling it unserious, and no verse anywhere ranked a reason above a response. 1 Samuel 16:7 says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gave a woman the ear she has been ignoring since June.

And here is the sentence that I would want said over that kitchen.

Choosing for meaning is a good thing to do, and this site says so on its own second row. Nothing here is against meaning. What is wrong is not the meaning. It is a woman overruling herself for four months and calling that being sensible.

You are permitted to be moved by a sound, and Scripture never once called an inward response the shallow half of a person. 1 Samuel 16 corrects the man looking at the outward appearance, and the Spirit of God is what makes an inward thing trustworthy.

Both, out loud, back to back

So here is the practical thing, and it is a test that has never actually been run.

Say both out loud, in a full sentence each, to one other person. Back to back.

Not in a head. In a mouth, in a room, in front of somebody. Because the whole comparison has been running on a screen, where a meaning is visible and a sound is not, and that field was tilted from the start.

Out loud, they compete fairly for the first time in four months.

You are able to run the test tonight, and 1 Samuel 16 has never once asked anybody to judge a thing in the dark. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes a fair hearing possible where a tilted one has been running since June, and the written word has the Lord looking where a man cannot look.

You are giving them an even hearing at last, and 1 Samuel 16:7 has never once let the visible marker settle a thing on its own. The written word puts the true seeing in God's hands, and the Holy Spirit is present in a kitchen where two names get said back to back.

And notice what happens in the body. One of them will come out easily. One will be enjoyed. The mouth will do something small and pleased that a person can feel from the inside and cannot manufacture.

That is not a shallow signal. That is the same instrument that has been telling the truth since week one, finally allowed to speak in a room instead of being outvoted by a page.

You are able to trust what your mouth does, and Scripture puts the heart above the outward marker without any hedging. 1 Samuel 16 says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one doing that looking while a woman says two names out loud.
