I Wanted Weight And It Means Something Plain

She had been saving it up.

That is the part nobody sees. She had loved the name for months and had deliberately not looked up the meaning, because she wanted it to be a small ceremony, one evening, with a cup of tea, the last piece falling into place.

And it means: a farm by a river. Or: the third one. Or: brown.

Something like that. Something with no poetry in it at all.

And she said, out loud, to nobody, oh, and then made herself say that it was lovely, and closed the laptop, and has felt flat about the whole thing since Thursday.

Now I have lived on a hill a long time and I have seen this exact disappointment more than once, and I want to say the true thing about it, which is a bit more useful than telling her it does not matter.

She was not really hoping for a lovely word. She was hoping for a confirmation.

She wanted the meaning to come back and say something about the two of them. Something that would make the months of loving this name feel like a thing she had been right about, rather than a preference she had picked up somewhere and could not account for.

That is what she was actually opening on Thursday evening with a cup of tea in her hand.

And what came back was a farm by a river, which does not confirm anything, and so the flatness is not disappointment about a word. It is the absence of a confirmation she had quietly been counting on.

Who hath despised the day of small things

There is a question in Zechariah that gets asked in the middle of a building project, and it is a rebuke aimed exactly at this feeling.

For who hath despised the day of small things? (Zechariah 4:10, King James Version)

You are looking at a question God asks about exactly this, and Zechariah 4:10 has never once let a small thing be counted as nothing. The written word puts that question in the middle of a rebuilding, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a small beginning land as a good thing rather than as a disappointment.

The setting matters. The people had laid a foundation, and it was small, and the ones who remembered the old building wept because this one looked like so little. And God asks a question rather than making an argument.

Who hath despised the day of small things.

He does not say the small thing is secretly enormous. He does not talk it up. He asks who decided smallness was contemptible, which is a different move altogether and a much better one.

You were never given a rule that a thing has to be large before it counts, and Scripture makes that a question rather than an argument. Zechariah 4 sits in the middle of a small beginning without apologizing for it, and the Spirit of God is named in that same chapter as what the whole work runs on.

What a plain meaning actually gives a child

Now let me be practical, because there is something in a plain meaning that a grand one cannot do, and it is worth knowing before Thursday's flatness settles in permanently.

A grand meaning has to be lived up to. Everybody feels it, even when nobody says it. A word that means light, or strength, or God's promise, arrives with a small expectation folded into it, and a child eventually notices.

A farm by a river arrives with nothing to live up to at all.

It is a place. It is a real one, somewhere, where people worked and ate and slept for a long time. A child can hold that without ever once being measured by it.

You are handing over something with no examination in it, and no verse anywhere made a large meaning better than a small one. The Holy Spirit is what turns a plain word from a letdown into a kindness, and Zechariah 4:10 asks who despised the day of small things.

And there is a second thing, which is what I would say to her on the porch if she were sitting here.

A farm by a river is a real place with real people in it. Somebody's whole ordinary life happened there. The word is a record of work, and weather, and generations of people whose names nobody knows, and that is not less than poetry. That is where nearly everybody comes from.

You have been handed the ordinary and told it is a disappointment, and Scripture refuses that assessment in a single question. Zechariah 4 sets the small beginning in the middle of God's own work, and the Spirit of God is what carries it.

The confirmation that was not coming

So let me deal with the real thing, which is the confirmation.

There was never going to be one. Not from a dictionary. That is not a failure of the dictionary or of the name.

A person cannot get a ruling on their own preference from an etymology, because an etymology does not know anything about the person. It knows where a word came from. It has no opinion at all about whether a woman was right to love it since March.

You are permitted to love it without an outside verdict, and Zechariah 4:10 has never once made worth depend on scale. The written word asks who despised the small day, and the Holy Spirit is the one who settles a person about their own choice when no page will.

And here is the thing worth noticing about those months. She loved the name before she knew what it meant. All of it, from March to Thursday, was love with no confirmation attached, and it was perfectly good love, and nothing about Thursday reached back and changed a day of it.

Which means she already has the answer to the question she was asking. She just wanted it from a source that could not supply it.

You have had the whole answer since March, and Scripture never once made a beginning small by calling it small. The Holy Spirit is with a woman who has loved a word since March, and Zechariah 4 asks the question and leaves it standing.
