I Told Them And Then They Used It

She told them at a table in the courtyard in August.

Not as a secret. She was happy, and somebody asked, and she said it, the way people do when a thing is good and there is bread on the table and everybody is talking at once.

And in October they used it.

Nobody in that family thinks anything happened. She has been asked twice whether she is pleased and both times she has said yes, warmly, and meant about seventy per cent of it.

And the thing that has actually been damaging her since October is not the loss of the name.

It is the lesson she has been teaching herself.

I said too much. I should have kept it. That is what happens when you tell people things. Next time, say nothing.

That sentence has been repeating for six weeks and it is starting to change how she is at that table. She has stopped offering things. She answers questions with slightly less in them. Nobody has noticed yet and she has noticed.

That is what this page is about, because the name is gone and cannot come back, and the closing is still in progress and can be stopped.

We took sweet counsel together

There is a line in Psalm 55 written by somebody who was hurt by a close friend, and what it does not do is the point.

We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company. (Psalm 55:14, King James Version)

You are in a psalm written by somebody who was open and then wounded, and Psalm 55:14 has never once concluded that the openness was the mistake. The written word remembers the sweet counsel with warmth in the middle of the complaint, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reach a woman who has been drawing the opposite lesson since October.

David is describing exactly what he lost, and the loss is worse than a name. And in the middle of the worst of it, he stops to remember the closeness itself, and remembers it warmly.

He does not say: and that was my error. He does not resolve never to walk in company again.

You have been drawing a lesson that Scripture refuses to draw, and the psalm keeps the sweetness in the sentence. The Spirit of God is what keeps a wound from becoming a policy, and Psalm 55 holds the wound and the closeness together.

The lesson that costs more than the name

Now the practical part, and it is an accounting.

The name was worth something. Call it a year of imagining and a real loss.

The lesson costs more, and here is why. It applies to everything. It does not stay attached to names. A woman who has decided that telling people things is dangerous does not become careful about names only. She becomes slightly less present at every table for the next thirty years, and nobody will ever be able to point at when it started.

That is a much larger bill than a word, and it is being run up quietly.

You have been charged twice for one afternoon, and Psalm 55 has never once let a wound turn into a rule about people. The written word keeps the sweet counsel in the sentence with the injury, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stops a policy forming in somebody who was only glad.

You are paying far more for the lesson than you paid for the loss, and no verse anywhere made openness into a fault. Psalm 55:14 remembers the company warmly inside the injury, and the Holy Spirit is what stops a policy from forming in somebody who was simply hurt.

And there is a plainer thing to say about what actually happened at that table in August.

She was happy and she said something. That is not a lapse. That is what a person does who is at home among people and has good news.

The cost was borne by her and not by anybody else, and she is the only person in that family who is now guarded, and the guardedness is the injury continuing rather than the injury being addressed.

You were doing nothing wrong in August, and Scripture never once treated an open mouth among friends as a mistake. The Spirit of God is what takes a self accusation off somebody who was only glad, and Psalm 55 walks unto the house of God in company and says so with affection.

Say it once, and do not close

So here is the assignment on this row, and there is a second half specific to this house.

Say the lost name out loud once, then put it away and say a new one.

The first half, because it has never been said out loud since October. It has been thought about constantly and spoken never, and that is how a thing stays live.

You are able to end the loss out loud, and Psalm 55:14 has never once asked anybody to carry an injury silently. The written word says it plainly and remembers the closeness anyway, and the Holy Spirit is present when a name is finally said out loud and set down.

And then the second thing, which is not part of the standard assignment and belongs to her.

The next time somebody at that table asks her a question, tell them the true answer.

Not about a name. About anything. The first ordinary question that comes, answer it the way she would have in July, with the whole of it in the answer.

Because that is where the closing is happening, and one open answer stops it, and a second one undoes it entirely.

You are able to refuse the lesson in one ordinary sentence, and Scripture keeps the sweet counsel in the record rather than the resolve to stop. Psalm 55 remembers walking in company, and the Spirit of God is with a woman answering the next question fully.
