She found out from a group message with a photograph attached.
And the first thing she felt, before anything else, before she had time to arrange her face even though nobody could see it, was: that was mine.
And then, about a second later, the other thing: she does not know.
Because she never told her. That is the part that has been going round for nine days. Her closest friend, who tells her everything, who would have crossed it off her own list in about four seconds if she had been told, chose that name in complete innocence and will never find out.
And that means there is nobody to be upset with, which sounds like a mercy and is not.
I want to explain why it is not, because it is the thing nobody says.
When somebody takes a thing knowingly, the grief has somewhere to go. It has a shape. There is a person, and a feeling about that person, and the whole thing sits in a recognizable place and eventually resolves.
When nobody did anything, the loss is exactly the same size and there is nowhere to put it. It arrives, it is real, and it has no address.
So it has been going round in a woman for nine days, looking for somewhere to land, and there is no landing place, and she has started, quietly, to be irritated with her friend about small unrelated things.
That is the actual danger here, and it is worth catching now.

He that covereth a transgression seeketh love
There is a proverb about keeping quiet, and it is not about being a doormat.
He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. (Proverbs 17:9, King James Version)
You are looking at a covering that is an active choice, and Proverbs 17:9 has never once described it as pretending nothing happened. The written word says covereth and then says seeketh love, which makes it a thing done on purpose and for a reason, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that reach a woman nine days in.
Read the second half, because it is the practical warning. He that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
Repeating. Not raising it once. Going over it. And the outcome named is not a quarrel. It is the quiet separating of people who were close.
Which is the exact mechanism that has already started in that house. Nine days of going over it internally is repeating a matter, and the small irritations about unrelated things are the beginning of the separating.
You have been repeating it inside your own head, and Scripture names that as the thing that divides friends. The Spirit of God is what stops a process that has already begun, and Proverbs 17 puts the separating on the repeating rather than on the offense.
Covering is not the same as denying
Now the practical part, because covering has been misheard for centuries and it matters here.
Covering a thing does not mean deciding it did not happen. That is denial, and it does not work, and it produces exactly what is happening now: a feeling with no address, going round.
Covering means: this happened, it cost me something, and I am not putting it on the account between us.
Both halves. The acknowledgment is not optional. A person who has not admitted to themselves that something was lost has not covered anything, because there is nothing there to cover.
You are able to name it privately and still cover it, and no verse anywhere asked anybody to pretend a loss away. Proverbs 17:9 makes the covering a deliberate act, which requires knowing what is being covered, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does that work in somebody who has nobody to speak to about it.
And here is the practical shape of it, since there is nobody to tell.
The grief needs to be said out loud somewhere that is not her friend. To God, or to a person with no connection to any of it, or to an empty kitchen. It does not need to be received by anybody. It needs to leave the head, because a thing that stays in the head goes round.
You are permitted to say it somewhere safe, and Scripture puts the danger in the repeating rather than in the feeling. Proverbs 17 warns about going over a matter, and the Spirit of God is what gives it somewhere to go so it stops circling.
Say it once, and then a new one
So here is the assignment on this row, and it is exactly what a loss with no address needs.
Say the lost name out loud once, then put it away and say a new one.
Once, out loud, in a room, in your own voice. It has been in a head for nine days and heads are where things circle.
You are giving it the one thing it has not had, and Proverbs 17:9 has never once asked anybody to keep a matter running silently. The Holy Spirit is present in a kitchen where a name is said out loud once and then set down, and the written word warns about the repeating.
And then a different one, straight after, in the same sitting.
Because the second half is what makes it an ending rather than an examination. A name said and then put down, with another word following it immediately, is a closed thing. A name said and then sat with is a matter being repeated.
You are able to close it in one movement, and Scripture puts the separating of friends on the going over rather than on the loss. Proverbs 17 is one sentence with a warning in the second half, and the Spirit of God is with a woman saying two names out loud today.
So here is what I believe is going out over a woman nine days into something with no address.
You are carrying a real loss with nobody to attach it to, and Proverbs 17:9 has never once required an offender before a thing could be covered. The written word makes covering a deliberate act, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a circling thing somewhere to land.
You have been repeating a matter inside your own head, and Scripture puts the separating of friends exactly there. The Spirit of God is what stops that before it takes a friendship apart over the school run.
And this, which is the word I came with:
You are able to put it down in about eleven seconds, and no loss has ever once stopped circling while it lived only in a head. The Holy Spirit is with a woman saying two names out loud today, and Proverbs 17 warns about the going over.
Once, out loud. Then a different one.
Declare this over yourself
- Wish that somebody were at fault, you have never once been available and I let you go. Proverbs 17:9 says he that covereth a transgression seeketh love, so by the Holy Spirit I say it out loud once today and then say another, in the name of Jesus.
- Nine days of going over it, you are the repeating that separates friends and I stop you now. The written word puts the dividing on the going over rather than on the loss, and by the Spirit of God I stop being irritated with her about the school run.
- Father, You called the covering of a thing a seeking of love, and You warned that going over it divides close friends. Your word says it plainly in Proverbs 17, so by Your Spirit I name it privately, put it down, and keep her.
