Somebody Made A Face And It Came Undone

It was settled. Properly settled, for eleven weeks.

And then a room, and a person, and a face.

Not a comment. Nothing that could be repeated or complained about. A very small pause before the mouth said oh, that is nice. Half a second, at most. Anybody watching would have seen nothing at all.

And the name has not been said out loud since.

Now let me tell you what that half second was, because it is worth naming precisely.

It was not a judgment on the name. It was a person hearing a word they had not expected and taking a moment to arrange their face. That is all it was. It happens forty times a day in every room on earth and means nothing whatsoever.

But it landed on somebody who was carrying an eleven week decision in her hands and holding it out to be looked at, and a half second is plenty long enough when you are standing like that.

So here is what actually happened. A vote got handed to somebody who never asked for one and does not know they have it, and who would be horrified to learn they had been given it.

That is worth sitting with, because it is the whole thing. Nobody took this. It was handed over, in a moment, without a decision, and it can be taken back the same way.

Do I now persuade men, or God

There is a line in Galatians where Paul asks himself a question out loud, and it is the exact question for a room like that one.

For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. (Galatians 1:10, King James Version)

You are answerable to God over this and not to a face, and Galatians 1:10 has never once made a room the authority on anything. The written word sets the two audiences side by side and picks one without hesitation, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that land on a woman who has been silent for two weeks.

And notice how Paul gets there. He asks it as a question, out loud, about himself. He does not assume he is clear. He checks. Which means this is a thing a person has to notice happening to them, because it happens quietly and it does not announce itself.

That is exactly what happened in that room. Nobody decided to start seeking approval. It arrived through a half second of somebody arranging their face.

You have been serving a room you did not choose, and Scripture names that shift plainly enough to catch it. Galatians 1 puts the question in the mouth of a man who is examining himself, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a person able to see it.

What a face is worth

Now the practical part, and it starts with a number.

That person will say this child's name, over a whole lifetime, perhaps two hundred times. Perhaps fewer.

The mother will say it fifty thousand times. Maybe more. Called up a staircase. Said in the dark. Used at a door, at a table, in a hospital corridor, in a moment of pure delight, in an argument, at a wedding.

You are the one who will actually be saying this, and no verse anywhere handed a naming to a bystander. The Holy Spirit is what restores a decision to the person who is going to live inside it, and Galatians 1:10 refuses the crowd as an authority.

And there is something else about that half second, which is that it is not even reliable evidence about what that person thinks.

Faces do all sorts of things. That pause could have been recognition, because the name belongs to somebody in their own history. It could have been surprise at an unusual choice. It could have been a bad morning. It could have been that they were about to say something else and changed course. Every one of those produces exactly the same half second, and there is no way of telling them apart from the outside.

An entire eleven week decision came apart on evidence that cannot be read.

You have been ruling on an expression that could mean six different things, and the written word never once made a reading of a face into a verdict. Galatians 1 asks whose approval is being sought, and the Spirit of God is the one who hands the question back.

Taking it back

So here is what to do, and it is not a confrontation with anybody and it is not an announcement.

Say it out loud again.

That is the whole remedy. The name went silent, and silence is what is doing the damage now, not the face. Every day it stays unsaid it gets a little more fragile, and fragility is not information about the name.

Say it to somebody safe, in an ordinary sentence, out loud. Not to that person. Not to test it. To hear it in the air again, in a room where nobody is arranging anything.

You are able to take this back in one sentence, and Galatians 1:10 has never once required a person to win a room first. The written word asks whether we persuade men or God, and the Holy Spirit is present in a kitchen where a name gets said again after two weeks.

And here is what usually happens, and it is worth knowing.

It sounds exactly the way it sounded eleven weeks ago. Nothing was actually changed by the half second. The name was never damaged. Only the saying of it stopped.

You were never wrong about it, and Scripture puts the pleasing of God above the pleasing of a room without any argument. The Holy Spirit is the one who gives it back the moment it is spoken.
