It Works At Home And Not At Thirty

He can hear it at home. That part is easy.

Called up a staircase. Said at a table on a Sunday with forty people in the house. Shouted from a doorway when the food is ready. In that setting, in that language, in that family, the name is perfect and has been since March.

And then he imagines a room in 2055.

A meeting. A handshake. His son saying his own name to a person who has not met him, and having to say it twice.

And the name that was perfect at a Sunday table stops being perfect, and he puts it back on the list, and the same thing happens again about ten days later.

I want to describe what has actually taken over that decision, because it is not caution.

A room that does not exist, in a year that has not happened, containing people who have not been born, has been given the casting vote on a word that is going to be said in his own kitchen ten thousand times before that room ever comes round.

And the kitchen has no vote at all.

That is upside down and it has been running for six months.

A good name is rather to be chosen

There is a proverb about a name that is quoted constantly and almost never read carefully.

A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1, King James Version)

You are looking at a verse about the name a person makes rather than the one they are handed, and Proverbs 22:1 has never once meant a pleasing sound. The written word sets it beside loving favor and riches, which are things a life produces, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that distinction land on a man deciding about syllables.

That verse is not about a well chosen word. It is about a reputation. It is the name in the sense of what people say when they hear about you, which is made over decades by conduct and not by parents in a kitchen.

So the good name in that meeting in 2055 will not be the sound of the word. It will be whether the man saying it is somebody people are glad to see.

You have been trying to buy in advance a thing Scripture says is earned, and the written word puts the good name beside loving favor rather than beside a pleasant sound. Proverbs 22 measures it by what a life produces, and the Spirit of God is the one at work in the decades that make it.

What the imagined room is made of

Now the practical part, and it is about who is actually in that meeting.

Everybody in it is invented. Every face, every reaction, every small pause after his son says his name. All of it comes out of one man's own history, not out of the future.

And in almost every case, the imagined room is a room he has been in himself, with the same feeling in it, at about twenty seven.

That is where the pause comes from. It is a memory wearing a suit from 2055.

You are furnishing that room out of your own past, and no verse anywhere gave a memory the authority to name a child. The Holy Spirit is what tells a man where a picture actually came from, and Proverbs 22:1 puts the good name in what a person becomes.

And here is what the arithmetic looks like when it is written down.

Ten thousand sayings at a kitchen table, in a family, warmly, over eighteen years. Against perhaps forty introductions a year in a working life, most of which go entirely fine, in a world that in 2055 will contain more names from more places than the one he grew up in, not fewer.

The kitchen is not a smaller consideration. It is by an enormous margin the larger one, and it has been outvoted by a room nobody has ever been in.

You are able to give the kitchen its vote back, and Scripture never once made a boardroom the measure of a name. Proverbs 22 sets the good name against silver and gold, and the Spirit of God is at work in ten thousand ordinary sayings.

Say it as an introduction

So here is the assignment, adapted, and it takes the fear seriously by running it rather than by arguing with it.

Say the name out loud as an introduction, in a full sentence, to one other person.

Meaning: say it the way his son will say it. Hand extended, in a room, to somebody who has not met him. This is my son and his name is this. Or, better, say it in the first person on his behalf, the way he will one day: my name is this.

Out loud, once, and then again.

You are running the actual scene instead of imagining it, and Proverbs 22:1 has never once made a sound the thing that is chosen. The written word puts the good name in a life rather than in a syllable, and the Holy Spirit is present in a room where a man says an introduction out loud.

Because the imagined version has been running in an anxious register for six months, in a voice that is already apologizing before it finishes.

And said out loud, in a normal voice, in a barbershop or a kitchen, most names sound like a person introducing himself. The pause that has been dreaded is not in the word. It is in the way the word has been rehearsed.

You are hearing the rehearsal and calling it the name, and Scripture measures the good name by loving favor. The Holy Spirit is with a father saying it out loud today, and Proverbs 22 puts it in what a man is known for.
